Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are custom-fitted, artificial tooth roots made from long-lasting, medical-grade materials. The implant, which is usually made of titanium, is surgically anchored into your jawbone, much like a real tooth root. Once the area around the root has healed, it’s fitted with an artificial tooth (a porcelain crown).

Dental implants are one of the most commonly requested offerings of cosmetic and restorative dentistry. In addition to being strong, stable, and permanent, they also blend in perfectly with your natural teeth, making them ideal for filling gaps to restore your smile.

Dr. Le also offers standard dental implants as well as specialized solutions, including:

All-on-4 implants

All-on-4 is an alternative dental implant solution that’s ideal for patients with low bone density or volume. It’s also an excellent option for patients with dentures who have experienced complications such as poor bite function, increased risk of gum disease, and frequent replacement.

Whereas single implants can require multiple surgeries, All-on-4 can be completed in one visit without bone grafting or sinus augmentation. It also has minimal recovery time and can have lower overall costs compared to conventional implant procedures.

Mini implants

These small implants are often the best option for patients with smaller teeth and incisors. Mini dental implants can also be ideal for front teeth, premolars, or teeth situated in narrow areas.

With mini implants, you can expect the procedure and recovery time to be quicker than traditional dental implants because they’re placed into the bone without affecting any sensory nerves.

Who can get dental implants?

Proper bone structure and healthy gums are essential for successful implant surgery, which means that patients who are in good health and have adequate jawbone mass can get implants without any additional procedures.

Before you can get dental implants, you’ll undergo a complimentary cone beam computed tomography (CT) scan to help ensure you’re a good candidate for the surgery. This special type of X-ray produces a 3D image of your teeth, soft tissues, nerves, and bones.

Besides revealing essential details about your bone structure, the image also helps Dr. Le determine the size and type of implant that you need.

How are dental implants installed?

Dr. Le uses Novadontics, a full-mouth rehabilitation program that uses state-of-the-art imaging and software designed to ensure reliable and permanent implantation results.

Dental implant surgery is an in-office procedure performed under local anesthesia. After Dr. Le anchors the titanium root into your jawbone, he secures your gum over the implant, so it has time to fuse with your bone.

Once the implant is fully fused, Dr. Le attaches a post to the implant, and then affixes an artificial tooth, or porcelain crown, to the post.

The time it takes to complete dental implantation varies from patient to patient, largely depending on how long it takes to recover after the initial surgery, and whether or not you need additional procedures like bone grafting.

Dr. Le can let you know what to expect after your initial consultation and exam.
